This article addresses the financial impact of the recently implemented
Health Information Portability and Accountability Act. It focuses on an
understanding of both the obvious and not so apparent costs incurred by
a clinic as well as suggests methods of cost containment and reduction.
The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) is the premier
trade association for health care financial professionals. The above article
was co-authored with a legal expert and published in HFMA’s national
journal. The article illustrated how the compliance plan laid out by the
federal Office of Inspector General (OIG) could be implemented in the
corporate health care setting.
The focus of this article is on the translation of legal requirements
of a compliance program into a functional reality. Ethical challenges
are laid out with how-to-do-it advice on building credibility with both
staff and government review agencies while maintaining effectiveness.
Practical tips are provided on strengthening the compliance aspect of
Medicare cost report preparation, creating a chain of accountability so
that cost report will better stand up to external challenges.
